Project for 4-H

Growing In CD Cases -  Found A couple great Projects for kids

Grass in a CD Case – Living Art

1. I started with just a couple spoonfuls of house plant soil soaked in enough water to get it really wet. I hand squeezed it and spread it out in the bottom of an open CD case (the original 1/4" thick ones).
2. About a teaspoon of grass seeds were spread near the top edge. The case was closed, wrapped in a rubber band to keep shut, and set in a window.
3. Fuzzy little seeds were showing in 2 or 3 days, and the grass a few days after that. The soil stays wet for a long time, but if it appears to be dry, the lid can carefully be lifted and water sprinkled inside.
4. Paint markers were used for drawing tiny little lady bugs. I printed out my message, taped it inside and traced it so my writing would be
nice and neat.

Here are a few pics of the 4-H kids Creations:

Antique Floor Lamp Planter

I picked up this Beautiful Antique Floor Lamp at a Tag Sale.  I loved the details and the Shabby creamy rust colors and the marble base.  It even came with the milk glass shade.   Thought it would make a great planter.  My son helped me attach a Vintage hanging Basket Base to it. I added some Moss, Soil, and some pink and Lime Green Plants and Ta da and Great tall planter for the summer.

Fairy Garden in an Old Red Wheelbarrow

We had a wonderful Time creating this Fairy Garden in an old red wheelbarrow.  I found the wheelbarrow in the trash a few years ago.  It was fun collecting little bits and pieces of junk for this project.  I found a box of vintage made in Japan miniature tea and ceramic things at an estate sale that worked perfect for planters and a bird bath.   The  Fairy is vintage birthday figurine- the Month is October- How perfect since that is my birth month.   The pebble covered house was free from Craigslist.  The Boys helped by smashing up terracotta pots for a path and cutting sticks for a garden fence and a campfire.  I have this little wheelbarrow garden in a shady spot so it is planted with a few mini hostas, chocoloate chip ajuga, coleus, and a pansy plant. The boys found a cedar seedling to add to the plantings.

Mini Hosta: Mascarade

Hosta 'Masquerade'

'Masquerade' is one of the prettiest miniature hostas and is the perfect choice for the front of the shaded rock garden or trough gardens.

I have a few left for sale but am going to keep a few for my mini-hosta garden and also add one to a fairy garden.

It forms cute little clumps of tiny white centered leaves edged by a green margin. I love the Purple flowers.  A flashy hosta sure to capture attention.

This precious little mini is hard to find. I have a few for sale at $9.

Beautiful Blooms at the Beginning of June

Roses, Clematis, Early-Blooming Daylily, Daisies, Peonies, Iris...and so many other perennials are in bloom right now.

June Garden Calendar:

  • Divide Spring Bloomers after flowers fade.  This includes Bearded Iris and Oriental Poppies.

  • Deadhead Perennials to keep the garden tidy and to limit disease, reduce reseeding, and for later blooms.

  • Because perennials need 1 inch of water per week right now, water if rainfall is scarce.  Check container perennials frequently to access water needs.

  • Pinch Asters and Chrysanthemums one last time before the Fourth of July.

  • Plant Fall-Flowering Perennials.
